Refugee Bags

Inspired by stories of Syrians who were recreating traditional foods in refugee camps to give a sense of normalcy and community to an otherwise difficult situation, I wanted to use food to foster empathy and awareness of the daily struggle faced by refugees around the world. This work highlights the contrast between basic food rations in refugee camps and the traditional and culturally-significant foods of some of the largest current refugee populations - from Syria, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These two sets of ingredients are listed on opposite sides of each bag, and the bags would be distributed at grocery stores throughout the U.S.
